Connect Axis cameras to Camzify

Axis IP cameras connect to Camzify over RTSP, so the cameras already installed can run AI detections, virtual patrol rounds and cloud recording without being replaced. Axis cameras use a single RTSP endpoint, /axis-media/media.amp, and choose the stream with URL parameters rather than fixed main and sub URLs. Axis lists RTSP being enabled on the camera as a prerequisite, and ONVIF works through a dedicated ONVIF account.

Axis RTSP URL format

As Axis’s own documentation gives it. Replace the parts in angle brackets with the camera’s values.

Default stream
rtsp://<username>:<password>@<camera-ip>/axis-media/media.amp

554 is Axis's default RTSP server port.

A specific video channel
rtsp://<username>:<password>@<camera-ip>/axis-media/media.amp?camera=<channel>

For devices with more than one video channel; camera=1 is the first.

A named stream profile
rtsp://<username>:<password>@<camera-ip>/axis-media/media.amp?camera=1&streamprofile=<profile-name>

A stream profile saved on the camera fixes the resolution and codec: Axis's way to get a lighter second stream.

Codec and resolution set in the URL
rtsp://<username>:<password>@<camera-ip>/axis-media/media.amp?videocodec=h264&resolution=640x480

Parameters are added to the URL; Axis supports them for H.264, H.265, AV1 and Motion JPEG streams.

Turning on RTSP and ONVIF on a Axis camera

Axis lists RTSP enabled on the camera as a prerequisite for streaming, so confirm it in the camera's web interface before connecting. For RTSP, Axis recommends digest access authentication.

For ONVIF, creating an ONVIF account in the camera's web interface turns ONVIF communication on automatically, and that account's name and password are used for all ONVIF communication with the device. Axis's Media account privilege allows access to the video stream only.

Can a Axis camera push RTMP?

Axis's documentation, as checked for this page, does not describe pushing RTMP from its cameras. Use RTSP instead; if a site needs a push, an encoder can convert the RTSP stream, as the RTMP setup guide explains. RTMP setup in Camzify.

Worth knowing before you connect

  • Axis notes that most web browsers cannot decode H.265, so its cameras do not show H.265 in their own web interface and Axis points to a video management system or application that supports H.265 decoding instead.

Adding the Axis stream to Camzify

  1. 1

    Check the stream plays

Open the RTSP URL above in a player such as VLC. If it plays from outside the camera’s network, Camzify can connect it directly.

  2. 2

    Local only? Use the Connector

If the camera is only on the local network, the Camzify Connector on a Windows, macOS or Linux machine there relays it, with no port forwarding.

  3. 3

    Add it in the console

Camera Management → Add Camera, paste the URL (or pick the relayed stream) and enter the camera’s credentials. The RTSP setup guide has the detail.

What runs on Axis cameras once they are connected

Once the stream is in Camzify, a Axis camera is treated exactly like any other: the brand decides nothing about which features it can use.

Frequently asked questions

rtsp://<username>:<password>@<camera-ip>/axis-media/media.amp, on the default RTSP port 554. Add camera=<n> for a specific channel or streamprofile=<name> for a saved stream profile.

Not as fixed URLs. Axis uses one endpoint and selects the stream with URL parameters, such as a named stream profile or a resolution and codec.

Create an ONVIF account in the camera's web interface. Axis turns ONVIF communication on automatically when the account is created, and a Media account is limited to the video stream.

Yes. Once the stream is added, Camzify runs virtual patrol rounds, its AI detections and cloud recording on an Axis camera like any other. The detections are Camzify's own and run alongside anything installed on the camera.
