False alarm
A false alarm is an alert raised by a security system for something that was not an incident, such as a shadow, an animal, a lighting change or a staff member who was allowed to be there. Every one costs an operator's attention and often a callout, and enough of them lead people to ignore the alerts that matter.
In video systems the classic source is pixel-based motion detection, which cannot tell a person from a headlight sweep. The second source is a rule drawn too wide, so a zone that should cover a yard also covers the road beside it. The third is timing: a detection that fires during the hours staff are expected.
The fixes follow the causes. Detections that fire on a confirmed object track rather than pixel change ignore lighting and weather. Zones and lines drawn to the property boundary ignore the road. A notification window per camera keeps a detection quiet in the hours people belong there.
